SCOTTISH THROUGH CARE AND AFTER CARE CONFERENCE 14th november 2008 - Click for larger version A bit about the day

Recently we at the debate project attended a confrence at the Crown Plaza Hotel. For us the day began with young peoples voices, were we got up on stage and said a few things about what young people had told us(on stage:- Sam,Kim,Chris and Cheryl), Cheryl even sang us a song which was pretty good :). It was all very embarrassing!! Next on the agenda was a few workshops that had been set up like, Better Options were young people from the Dean and Cauvin Trust had an interactive session on the options young people have when leaving care and how they can be improved also a workshop on glass painting and urban art provided by Recoat and Fab Pad. After a break everyone was back in the main hall for a session on community support for young people leaving care, here people like Adam Ingram(minnister for children and young people),and Bridget McConnell(chief executive of glasgow culture and leisure) said a few things, although we wern't there as we were setting our workshop up!! It was our turn to shine after this as some young people came to our workshop and, after a few ice-breakers, we took some groups and discussed a few of the Sweet 16 recommendations e.g. young people should not be placed in hostels and a few others. We got some very good feedback from this session and I think the young people in the groups were keen to get their point across of what they think could make leaving care easier and less stressfull. A short break came next and after, it was back in the main hall were there was a brief talk(well I say brief! Most of us were sleeping by the end!) on housing and accomodation support for young people leaving care and what the housing and government were doing to help. Our own Pamela Graham was up next with a few words on taking forward the recommendations of the sweet 16, we got party hooters!! but I wont go into detail on that :). The day ended with a few questions from people that attended then the room emptyed. Basically the whole day was about young care leavers and what can and wil be done to help them have a fighting chance in this chaotic world.
